Choosing early childhood education is one of the biggest decisions many parents make, and it's easy to assume that a childcare centre is the only option. In reality, families have a range of choices available, including home based education, kindergartens, forest schools, and nannies.
In New Zealand, home based education is a licensed early childhood service where children learn in the home of a level 4 qualified educator, supported by a qualified visiting teacher. While regulations differ across countries, similar models exist in Australia, the United States, Canada, and many other parts of the world.
So how do you know whether home based childcare is the right fit for your child?

The goal isn't to find the best ECE service, it is to find the environment where your child feels safe, valued, and understood.

When visiting any early childhood service, it's easy to be influenced by beautiful environments or impressive resources.
Instead, pay attention to what really matters:

These observations tell you far more about quality than expensive furniture or perfectly styled play spaces.

There Is No Perfect Setting
Home based education isn't the right choice for every family, and neither are ECE centres. Children learn best when they feel emotionally secure, connected to caring adults, and free to explore in ways that suit their personalities. Choosing early childhood education isn't about finding the most impressive service. It's about finding the place where your child feels they belong.
